We caught up with our friends at Art Rookie to find out what they have been up to. Art Rookie is a unique online sales platform for up and coming UK artists and designers, supporting British graduates on their road to commercial success.
How did you get into the industry?
Liz: I studied textile and print design at Chelsea College of Art and Design where I initially learnt the surface printing techniques I now use at Art Rookie. I began my career as a freelance designer, selling hand-painted silk prints to international fashion houses and high-street suppliers. This helped me become more aware of commercial designing and creating designs to appeal to the public. I followed this by starting my own printed scarf label 'Elizabeth Kate' in 2011 and later opening a shop in London's West-End. Through Elizabeth Kate I grew a greater knowledge of the design industry and the challenges you face, whether it be business costs, promotional struggles or general responsibilities. This helped spark the idea of Art Rookie.
Jodie: My background is in the world of fashion styling and photography. I graduated from Middlesex University with a degree in Photography; through this I discovered my natural talent for styling. These skills lead me to work for Burberry, Sony Music, Syco, along with other freelance styling and editorial roles. In 2011 I styled on the X-Factor live shows, leading me to eventually style the winners Little Mix and the X-factor live tour. Liz introduced me to the world of creating printed products and together with our versatile skills we formed Art Rookie.
