Meet the designer: Charlotte Jade

We caught up with Textile/Wallpaper Designer & Illustrator Charlotte Jade to find out a little more about her and what she's been up to. We love her bright and colourful designs!

How did you get into the industry?

My final year at university was particularly focused on making digital patterns. I had always loved print design, particularly for wallpapers and interiors, so I decided to specialize in this area. I thoroughly enjoyed creating these digital patterns, and seeing them be used for actual products really pushed me to want to pursue a career in print design and develop my own brand. After finishing university in 2014, I started working as a freelance print designer and illustrator under the company name, ‘Charlotte Jade’ and in November last year, my sister, Kate, and myself became joint business partners of the business. We have always dreamt of running our own business together and with us both having a love of print and interiors, we decided to pool our creative skills together in our own joint venture.

What inspires you?

We are primarily inspired by plants, foliage and animals when creating our patterns and draw a lot of influence from the beauty in nature. Fashion is another huge inspiration for us, as we love keeping up to date with styles from the runway and current fashion trends. We love spending the day visiting art exhibitions or wondering round the V&A looking at vintage prints.

How would you describe the brands style?

Our style is usually very detailed and involves a bold use of colour. We hand draw and design all our patterns ourselves, generally using pencil or ink, and then applying colour digitally. We feel our products are quite unique and different from other brands out there, due to them all being printed with intricately bright and modern patterns, with a unique balance of subtlety and elegance – a combination that has since become the essence of our brand.

What projects are you currently working on?

Currently, we are designing patterns for a new hotel development in America, designing logos and branded wallpaper for residential housing group One Housing, along with recently creating a bespoke pattern for Brit Award Winner Jack Garratt’s tour merchandise.

Have you got any new products in the pipeline?

We are looking to print onto make up bags and bed linen within the near future. Along with this, we aim to be selling a wider range of our prints on wallpaper rolls and cushion covers.

How/ where can the public purchase your products?

You can purchase wallpaper and cushions from our website, charlotte-jade.co.uk, along with enquiring about our bespoke services. At Charlotte Jade we can work with clients to create bespoke hand drawn patterns, specifically tailored to our individual customers and projects. Our online stockists of wallpaper and cushions are: Amara, Beut, Rose & Grey, Primrose Homeware, Select Wallpaper and The Pattern Collective. Charlotte Jade prints can also be purchased from Timbergram, a stationery company.
