Meet the Designer: Andrew Carpenter Design

We caught up with Andrew from Andrew Carpenter design to see what inspires him and what he has been up to.

How did you get into the industry?

That’s a big question! I was always interested in designing and making and originally trained as a boat builder and made racing yachts, racing dinghies and windsurfers. In the mid 80’s I was in London and saw early furniture designs by Philippe Starck at Mary Fox Linton. I decided that I needed to find out more about furniture design and enrolled on a Foundation course in Art and Design and then progressed to Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication. After graduating I designed for several furniture design companies and also taught three dimensional design at various colleges and universities before making the leap into running my own company.

What inspires you?

I think visual inspiration is everywhere. However, I’ve always admired people that can create beautiful artefacts. As a young boy I was inspired by my grandfather who In his spare time made amazing leather saddles and bridles and sold them to bring in extra money. I would watch him work, thinking how is it possible to turn a flat piece of leather into something so beautiful. Later, I was inspired by yacht designers and builders of highly sophisticated wooden racing yachts which were very functional yet graceful.

How would you describe your style?

It’s handmade contemporary, that has a pared down functional and tactile aesthetic

What projects are you currently working on?

As well as making various items of furniture, I am developing some hallway furniture such as the ‘Hall Tidy’ which has just been released. It’s an area of a house that is sometimes overlooked as you tend to pass through it rather than linger there. But it is also the introduction to the interior so should be given special attention. A private commission for a large cabinet to display Murano glass is also being drawn up.

Have you got any new products in the pipeline?

I always have products in the pipeline and I am hoping to follow up the recent hallway designs with a quirky console unit.

Where can the public purchase your products?

Currently our furniture is only available through the website. We are set up as ‘manutailers' which means the public can buy high quality handmade contemporary furniture direct.
